Is Telehealth Therapy as Effective as In-Person Counselling?

If you've been thinking about counselling but aren't sure whether online therapy actually works, you're not alone. It's one of the most common questions we hear at Good Chat Counselling. The short answer? Yes — and the research backs it up.

What the Research Says

Over the past decade, a growing body of evidence has confirmed that telehealth counselling delivers outcomes comparable to face-to-face therapy for a wide range of mental health concerns.

A landmark review published in World Psychiatry (2020) examined over 100 randomised controlled trials and found that videoconference-based cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) was as effective as in-person delivery for treating anxiety, depression, and PTSD. A separate meta-analysis in the Journal of Anxiety Disorders reached similar conclusions, finding no significant difference in treatment outcomes between online and in-person modalities.

For Australians, this is particularly significant. A 2022 report by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare found that telehealth services dramatically increased access to mental health care — particularly for people in regional and remote areas, and those with mobility or transport barriers.

Why Online Counselling Works

The therapeutic relationship — the connection between you and your counsellor — is one of the strongest predictors of good therapy outcomes. And research shows this connection transfers effectively to video-based sessions. Many clients actually report feeling more comfortable opening up from the safety of their own home.

Other advantages include:

  • Reduced barriers to access — no need to travel or take time off work

  • Greater consistency — sessions are easier to maintain, leading to better progress

  • Comfort and privacy — attending from home can reduce anxiety about the therapeutic process itself

  • Flexibility — sessions can fit around your schedule, including evenings and weekends

Is It Right for Everyone?

While telehealth is highly effective for most people, it may not be suitable in all circumstances — for example, in situations of acute crisis or complex care needs. Your counsellor will work with you to determine the best approach for your situation.
